Part of a New York art movement in the late 70s and early 80s alongside legendary figures like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf, Haring’s use of subway advertising panels as a canvas for his rhythmic, energetic chalk designs quickly made him a fixture of NYC life. Throughout his career, even as he became the darling of galleries and museums around the world, many of his works were made for the public, often in orphanages and hospitals, as well as collaborative murals like his design for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986, which Haring developed with 900 children.

One of Haring’s final works, Unfinished Painting, is an enduring image of the late 1980s. A partly-filled canvas (as the name suggests), Haring left this piece incomplete as a statement on the devastating effect of the AIDS crisis and its impact on the queer community, and on Haring’s own life.
